Thumbs-up! Excavation Project Directed by Capital Normal University Was Selected to Be One of China's Top Ten New Archaeological Discoveries of 2023

From March 21 toﻪMarch 22, the Final Evaluation Conference for China's Top Ten NewﻪArchaeological Discoveries of 2023 hosted by the Weekly of China's Cultural Relics andﻪthe Society of Chinese Archaeology was held in Beijing. In the conference, theﻪjury voted for China's top ten archaeological discoveries of 2023 after projectﻪbriefing and comprehensive evaluation. WangzhuangﻪSite in Yongcheng, Henan Province, which was excavated by the CNU, the HenanﻪProvincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, the Institute ofﻪArchaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Shangqiu MunicipalﻪInstitute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, was successfully selected,ﻪwhich is the second honor for Wangzhuang Site after winning Henan Province'sﻪTop Ten Archaeological Discoveries of 2023."

Wangzhuang Siteﻪis located in Caolou Village, Miaoqiao Town, about 13 kilometers east ofﻪYongcheng City, Shangqiu City, Henan Province, where a joint archaeologicalﻪteam of Capital Normal University,ﻪHenan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, the Instituteﻪof Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Shangqiu MunicipalﻪInstitute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology formally carried outﻪarchaeological excavations over 350 square meters from April to December 2023 with the approval of the National CulturalﻪHeritage Administration. Meanwhile, the team carried out a comprehensiveﻪexploration.



WangzhuangﻪSite is an important archaeological discovery of Dawenkou culture in recentﻪyears. It can be identified as a middle settlement of the mid-to-late Dawenkouﻪculture in eastern Henan. The remains of ring trenches, high-grade tombs andﻪunearthed relics found at the site are ofﻪgreat academic value and significance.

In 2023, more than 50 teachers and students majoringﻪin Archaeology from the School of History of our university participated inﻪthe excavation and research work of the project, withAssociate Professor Zhu Guanghua of the School of History as leader, Professor Yuan Guangguang, Director of the Department ofﻪArchaeology of the School of History, asﻪguider, and 2020 undergraduateﻪstudents and some graduate students in Archaeology from the School ofﻪHistory as excavation and research participants.
