Speaker: Dr. Xianfeng David Gu

Time: 14:00 on May 30th, 2019

Location: Room 120 in Second Teaching Building

Dr. Xianfeng David Gu got his bachelor from Tsinghua university, M.S. and PhD. from Harvard university, supervised by the Fields medalist, world renowned differential geometer, Professor Shing-Tung Yau. Dr. Gu and Prof. Yau together founded an  interdisciplinary field-Computational  Conformal Geometry, which applied modern geometry in engineering and medical fields. Dr. Gu won NSF Career award in 2005, Outstanding Overseas Young Scholar from National Science Foundation of China in 2006, and the Morningside Gold Medal in Applied Mathematics of International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians in 2013.

Abstract:

Computational Conformal Geometry is an emerging interdisciplinary field, combining modern geometry with computer science. This talk covers the fundamental theorems in conformal geometry, which include surface uniformization, harmonic mappings, Hodge decomposition and surface Ricci flow. Computational algorithms will be introduced briefly. Computational conformal geometry has been applied in a broad range of fields in both engineering and medicine. The applications include global surface parameterization in computer graphics, surface registration and dynamic shape tracking in computer vision; efficient routing in wireless sensor network; manifold splines in geometric modeling; brain mapping and virtual colon-oscopy in medical imaging.
