On November 6, the CNU held the conference on the founding of the Research and Assessment Center for School Curriculum and Textbooks (the Center). The Center is established by the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development, the Ministry of Education and the CNU, subordinate to the College of Education, CNU. Scholars from universities and the publishing industry and media representatives attended the conference, hosted by the Vice President Meng Fanhua.

The staff at the center will follow the principle of “full-time and part-time, in-school and outside-school”. They include researchers on educational theories, education administration staff, and teachers and researchers of secondary and primary schools. In the initial stage, there will be 5-7 researchers.

The Center will focus on key and core issues of development of Chinese textbooks and put the following four research fields as priorities based on the CNU’s characteristics: basic theoretical research of textbooks; research and evaluation of textbooks in secondary and primary schools; research and evaluation of specialized textbooks, the teaching and learning research of textbooks.

Six tasks will be completed by the Center. Firstly, conduct research and evaluation of textbooks in secondary and primary schools. Secondly, publish evaluation reports for various textbooks. Thirdly, establish a “round-table forum” to set up a platform for academic exchanges and innovations and realize the training of first-class talents. Fourthly, publish Textbooks Review once or twice a year to build the only academic platform in mainland China for research and evaluation of textbooks. Next, hold academic domestic and international conferences about research of textbooks, set up an exchange mechanism for research of textbook in the four districts of Cross-Straits and establish a discussion mechanism with textbook publishing organizations. Lastly, accomplish the research and developing task assigned by the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development, the Ministry of Education and the research task assigned by the National Committee of School Curriculum and Textbook.
