One of the top mathematics journals, “Annals of Mathematics”, run by Princeton University, has published a paper “Dynamical spectral rigidity among Z/2-symmetric strictly convex domains close to a circle”(Volume 186),which is written by Associate Professor Wei Qiaoling from the College of Mathematics and Science.

This 38-page paper is about research conducted about the “identification of a drum by its sound”, namely identifying the shape of a drum by its beats or sounds. This was initially brought up in a speech made by Nobel laureate and physicist Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (who formed the basis of the special relativity theory) in Gottingen, 1910. But it failed to answer some basic questions. Professor Wei Qiaoling and the other authors meanwhile prove the “dynamical spectral rigidity among Z/2-symmetric strictly convex domains close to a circle”. They thus made a breakthrough with international recognition of their results.

“Annals of Mathematics is one of the four well-known and widely recognized top mathematical journals in the world. No more than 60 papers could be published in the journal annually (even tougher than Naturel and Science). Statistics indicate that not more than 30 Chinese papers have been published in this journal since the People’s Republic of China was founded.
