Content

This course covers the major analytical functionalities on the basis of Introductory GIS. Topics include location-allocation, route planning, spatial interpolation, transportation planning and GIS process modeling using model builder and Python. Through lab sessions, it enables students to foster an appreciation of GIS spatial analysis as an effective tool for solving complex geographical and transportation issues.

Teacher

Bo HUANG Professor in the Department of Geography and Resource Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he is also the Associate Director of Institute of Space and Earth Information Science and the Director of MSc Program in GeoInformation Science. He received Changjiang Scholar Chair Professorship, the highest academic award issued to an individual in higher education by the Ministry of Education of PR China. Dr. Huang’s research interest focuses on geographical information science and he has published extensively in this field, including over 100 refereed international journal articles. He currently serves as the Asia-Pacific Editor of International Journal of Geographical Information Science (Taylor & Francis).

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, it is expected that the students will be able to:

  • Synthesize and integrate concepts of GIS theory, methodology and spatial analysis.
  • Develop an understanding of advanced spatial analytical functionalities, including spatial interpolation, route planning, and location-allocation.
  • Gain an understanding of GIS workflow modeling using model builder and Python.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge to solve transportation and other geographical issues using GIS.

Assessment

Grading of the students will be based on two components: (1) laboratory reports (30%) and (2) an exam (70%).
