The Department of Mathematics of CNU was founded in 1954. Over the past 50 years, the department has turned out over 10,000 mathematics teachers for middle schools in Beijing and professionals in various sectors. Since 1981, the department has nurtured 300 masters and doctors in ¡°Fundamental Mathematics ¡± and ¡°Applied Mathematics¡±, including Rong Xiaochun who gave a 45-minute report on the international mathematician meeting 2002 and the top-level mathematics teacher Zhang Siming of the junior high school affiliated to Beijing University. The Department of Mathematics of CNU was authorized to set up ¡°doctorate station of fundamental mathematics¡± in 1996, and in 2003 it was authorized to establish ¡°doctorate station of applied mathematics¡± and ¡°post-doctorate station of mathematics¡±. The ¡°Fundamental Mathematics¡± is a key discipline of Beijing and ¡°Applied Mathematics¡± is a key developing discipline of Beijing. Through the initiatives of Beijing ¡°211 Project¡± and prioritized constructions during the ¡°10th Five-year Plan¡± period, the Department of Mathematics of CNU has formed its characteristics and advantages in the disciplines of ¡°fundamental mathematics¡±, ¡°applied mathematics¡± and ¡°calculation mathematics¡±. In the research segments of ¡°non-linear analysis¡±, ¡°mathematical physics¡±, ¡°theory and calculation of partial differential equations¡±, ¡°information and computing science¡±, ¡°complex variable function¡±, ¡°algebra and number theory¡± and ¡°geometry and topology¡±, the middle-aged and young teachers have been able to take up majority of the work with high academic levels, vigorous energy and huge potential. The Department of Mathematics of CNU is very active in research work, engaged in 24 projects sponsored by National Nature and Science Fund during 2002 to 2005. This department owns large volumes of books with the well-equipped ¡°computing lab¡± and ¡°imaging test lab¡± providing excellent material guarantee to the teaching and research work. |
